Summary
Skins are a feature in R2DA which decorate and make showing off your gun easier. Apart from looking aesthetically pleasing, skins provide no benefits for your character or weapons. However, getting a kill with a weapon with the Golden skin equipped will Goldify the player it kills. Players with the Goldify effect cannot be revived.
To customize your gun, purchase it, then click the crate icon. Afterwards, click "Unpackage" icon to get your skin.
You must own a Skincrate (or similar, like the Golden Skincrate) to unbox a custom skin that can be applied to your gun.
